The New Avengers Has The Biggest Opening Of All Time
This weekend, Marvel Studios finally released the culmination of ten years of superhero movies within their Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the reaction was everything they expected and more. After the 18 previous films covered a lot ground, sending a variety of characters to fight powerful villains throughout space and time, Avengers: Infinity War sees all of them come together for one epic adventure.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, The Guardians of the Galaxy and a slew of other heroes have to team up against Josh Brolin’s Thanos, who has been teased multiple times leading up to Infinity War.
While the characters have all had, and been a part of, successful solo films, even appearing with each other every once in a while, the new release marks the first time this many movie stars and their iconic counterparts have appeared together on the big screen for one story. Audiences flocked to theaters to witness this amazing feat and avoid any spoilers that are sure to start flooding the internet soon.
The new Avengers not only had the biggest domestic box office opening with $258.2 million, beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $248 million, but it also had the biggest worldwide opening with $640.9 million, beating The Fate of the Furious’ $541.9 million. And the only reason it didn’t have the biggest international opening is because it isn’t out in China until May 11. It also surpassed the first Avengers movie, which brought in $207.4 million, for the biggest superhero opening, as well as the biggest Saturday and Sunday openings in North American history.
