The Nemeth Parasol

Scaled Composites Model 281 Proteus

Popular Mechanics

This bizarre aircraft was designed by Burt Rutan in the 1990's. It was meant to serve in high-altitude telecommunications relay.

The plane was designed for maximum efficiency. It was able to fly for eighteen consecutive hours, at an altitude of 65,000 feet.

The Proteus was rendered obsolete by unmanned drones. Manned, long-distance flights of this nature are now a thing of the past.
