Signs You Need to Quit Your Job and Go to Work for Yourself

Just about everyone at some point in their life has had a job they absolutely hated. Some were brave enough to put in their notice, while others were too dependent on their salary and the stability the job offered. Whatever the case, there comes a time when enough is enough, and the decision to be happy and move on is made. Some people are unhappy at work and don’t realize it, while others continue to downplay the negative of their job and push forward. Learn to recognize the signs that you need to quit your job and go to work for yourself and ensure future happiness and peace of mind.

You’re Undervalued and Underappreciated

Unfortunately, being undervalued or underappreciated is quite common in the work force. Nothing beats down morale and productive behavior like management that doesn’t value or appreciate their hard-working employees. If you haven’t received a bonus, been denied a raise, or at the very least received words of appreciation such as ‘thank you’; then you are an undervalued and underappreciated employee and it’s time to move on.

Your Ideas and Contributions Get Blown Off

The best companies inspire innovative thinking amongst their employees, encouraging idea sharing and creative thinking. If you are passionate about your job and have ideas that you believe in but find that management doesn’t care or won’t listen to what you have to share, then your skillset and passion are better suited somewhere else. Management that stifles idea-sharing and creative thinking will struggle to survive and thrive. There are far less limitations when working for yourself and zero limitations on creative thinking.

Work is a Dreaded Chore

If you have to give yourself a pep talk in order to get out of bed and go to work or you watch the clock like a hawk waiting for your next opportunity to leave work, then you need to move on. Life is far too short to spend most of your waking hours working in an environment you despise and with people you don’t care for. It also happens to be one of the worst things you can do for your health.

You Don’t Feel Like You’re Doing Anything Meaningful

The happiest people in the world are the ones that feel as though they have a purpose and provide a meaningful contribution to society or the world. If you feel dead at work, uninspired, or as though you are just one small cog in a large machine, you need to make a change. You don’t have to settle for being a faceless number in a sea of people. You can be someone who matters, doing what you love and working for yourself.

You’re Not Learning

When you’ve stopped learning, you’ve stopped living. Growth through learning is essential to happy and healthy humans. There are far too many hamsters running the wheel out there; the world doesn’t need another one. Growing and learning something new can be intimidating and maybe even a little bit scary, but nothing stills and deadens the human spirit like stagnation. If you find that you’ve stopped learning and growing at work, it’s time to move on.

You’ve Outgrown Your Job

Sometimes people find a job that they love and excel in, so much so that they hit the ceiling and there is nowhere else to go. Other times, people begin a job or career and find themselves evolving in a direction that no longer fits the company. These are two clear signs that it is time to expand your wings and learn to fly on your own. Successful, happy people don’t limit themselves or allow others limit them. Don’t make the mistake of letting your job or career keep you from growing and continuing your evolution.

It’s easy to tell when it’s time to move on and go into business for yourself once you know what to look for. Poor treatment, underappreciation, lack of growth, and reluctance to go to work are all clear signs that you should call an end to your current job. Those who work for themselves not only proclaim a higher job satisfaction, but a higher level of happiness as well. Take charge, follow your dreams, and go to work for yourself. It’s time for a change.
