American Idol began its run on June 11, 2002, and went all the way until April 7, 2016. It is actually based on a British singing reality show called Pop Idol. The premise of the show was new at the time of its inception. Unsigned artists pass a series of auditions and get voted through subsequent rounds by American viewers through phone, texts, and the internet.
The series had a total of 15 seasons and was the most watched show from 2004 to 2011. Pretty impressive!
The show is responsible for kickstarting many pop and country stars' careers. Some of the most successful stars on the show were not even actual winners but were runners-up or even lower than that.
