Drone Footage Shows a Giant Mysterious Ice Disk in Maine

The Presumpscot River in the small town of Westbrook, Maine has been the focus of a lot of speculation since a massive ice disk appeared randomly this week.

Many likened it to an alien crop circle or maybe the product of a sinkhole forming deep underground. Others think it could have a much more sinister supernatural origin. Beyond all the theories, scientists have weighed in on what they call an "unusual, but entirely natural, phenomenon," according to the New York Times. Apparently, the ice disk forms as water freezes in an eddy, which is the swirling of a fluid and the reverse current created when the fluid is in a turbulent flow regime. The current circles as debris, like land, rocks and mud, shave down the sides into the shape of a disk...

Experts say this only happens once or twice per year, but that they are almost never this big. Actually, the Presumpscot River ice disk is over ten times the size of most other reported occurrences. Dr Kenneth G. Libbrecht, a California Institute of Technology physics professor, said it could hold the world record.
