It’s no new news that the Indian military has been focused on upgrading its defenses, particularly as it relates to nuclear weaponry. In 2015, this new nuclear submarine achieved one of those goals, as the reactor onboard gives the underwater strategic tactical missile launcher practically unlimited range. This reactor is also capable of providing up to 110,000 horsepower, or about as much as a Boeing 777 jet engine.
This is a major upgrade to their fleet as most of their submarines are from the soviet era and lack modern sonar and launch systems. The Vertical Launch Systems (VLS) enable a firing range of up to 1,900 kilometers, or about 1,200 miles. The date these submarines will be commissioned is still being determined, but when they do, it will greatly increase India’s naval ballistic footprint.
