Cult: a system of religious devotion directed towards a particular figure or object. Although not all cults are bad, people in cults generally have strange or sinister practices. So it may come as a surprise to you that some of Hollywood's finest grew up in these misguided communities.

Many of these stars have overcome their traumatic childhoods, while a few are still embracing  the world they were brought up in. Here are 14 celebrities who were raised in or are still in cults:

Over the years, Glenn Close has garnered a respected career and established herself as one of the greatest actresses in her generation. Close has always considered herself "kind of a recluse", but she shocked the world when she opened up about her childhood.

Her father was a doctor who got his family wrapped up in a religious cult called the Moral Re-Armament when Glenn was 7. "You basically weren't allowed to do anything, or you were made to feel guilty about any unnatural desire," she said. Glenn escaped the cult by going off to college at the age of 22 but admitted that her past haunted her for a long time.
